Catalina Island Marine Studies

Learn about ongoing and past research by the Catalina Marine Society and how scientific experiments on Catalina Island reveal important oceanographic results applicable to global concerns. This month's speaker, Karen Norris, will cover these topics and dive into the concepts of ocean acidification and ocean warming to discuss how climate change may directly impact the ecology of Catalina Island waters.

Speaker:  Karen Norris is a Southern California native. She has spent many years visiting Catalina Island, hiking its trails, diving and kayaking its waters. She is a three-time Paralympian with world records in three swimming events. Karen attended UCLA and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Mathematics and a Masters degree in Oceanography. Karen worked in the defense industry, developing signal processing algorithms. For more than 20 years, she has applied those skills to support the Catalina Marine Society.
