The Catalina Island Conservancy invites you to an evening of powerful storytelling and discovery with Tara Roberts, National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence. As part of our Catalina Speaker Series, this event bridges Catalina’s wildlands and history with global stories of exploration, resilience, and environmental justice.
The evening kicks off with a welcome reception at 5:00 PM, featuring free light fare and a full bar with drinks available for purchase and the chance to mingle with fellow attendees before the talk begins.
This in-person event is presented by the Catalina Island Conservancy as part of its mission to foster education, conservation, and community through compelling conversations that connect Catalina’s wildlands to global environmental and cultural issues.

Featured Guest: Tara Roberts is a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence. She has spent the last few years diving with and telling stories about Black scuba divers as they searched for and helped document slave shipwrecks around the world. Her journey was turned into a National Geographic-produced podcast called “Into the Depths” and featured in the March issue of National Geographic. Tara became the first Black female explorer ever to be featured on the cover of the magazine. And in 2022, she was named the Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year. Tara was also named a Fellow at the MIT Open Documentary Lab in 2019. She spent her early career years working as an editor for women and teen magazines like Essence and CosmoGirl.
